Last week I joined an industry webinar focused on preparing for Black Friday, with some brilliant speakers from across the affiliate industry sharing their thoughts on everything from promotional planning to publisher engagement. One statistic that really caught my attention was that 56% of UK retailers are already planning their Black Friday campaigns. It was a good reminder that the brands who perform best during peak trading don't start preparing in October, they're making decisions now about where to focus their time, budget and effort.

One of the themes that stayed with me wasn't about recruiting more affiliate partners or launching more campaigns. It was about getting more value from the partnerships you already have. That really resonated because affiliate managers are often under pressure to deliver growth while juggling hundreds, sometimes thousands, of publisher relationships. The challenge isn't usually finding more partners; it's knowing which of your existing partners deserve your attention.

Performance reports only tell part of the story

Traditionally, that question has been answered by looking at performance reports. You identify the publishers generating the most clicks, sales and commission and naturally spend more time investing in those relationships. The problem is that these reports are designed to tell us what has already happened. They don't necessarily tell us where the next opportunity is emerging.

What if your next growth opportunity isn't your biggest partner today? What if it's the publisher that's steadily increasing its audience, expanding into new content categories or beginning to drive meaningful traffic through AI search experiences? Perhaps it's a creator consistently producing high-quality social content, or a website that's mentioning your brand more frequently but hasn't yet become one of your top revenue drivers. These are the early signals of future growth, but they're easy to overlook when you're focused on historical performance.

Which partners are building momentum?

Rather than asking, “Who are my biggest partners?” we should be asking, “Which partners are building the strongest momentum?” They're very different questions and I think the second is much more valuable, particularly as we head towards key trading periods like Black Friday.

It's also the thinking behind what we're building with Trackback. Instead of simply reporting on transactions, we're focused on helping affiliate managers identify the partners that are changing, growing and creating new opportunities. Whether that's emerging publishers, new traffic sources, brand mentions or changes in partner activity, the aim is to help teams prioritise where they spend their time rather than simply giving them more data to analyse.

Your next growth may already be in your program

As Black Friday approaches, perhaps the biggest opportunity isn't recruiting more partners at all. It might simply be understanding the ones you already have a little better. After all, your affiliate program is already telling you where your next growth will come from, you just need the right signals to recognise it.
